Dementia Care at Lynwood Care Home
When you have a loved one with dementia, there comes a point when you realise that you can’t look after them properly at home anymore. Great care starts with a detailed understanding of each person that comes to live with us. As new residents join us, we work them and their relatives to build a picture of them, called a Life History Book. This details their history, their likes and habits, the important people in their lives, and what their physical and medical needs are. With this information, our staff begin to really get to know and respect each individual in their care.
All of our carers have been trained in the Newcastle Model for dementia care which allows them to better understand each resident’s behaviour, particularly if it becomes challenging, and how this might be a way of communicating unmet needs. Carers can then address these needs, often reducing the need for medication. The result is happier residents, living as well as possible with dementia.
Across our Ben care homes, we have rolled out a new care model which puts the resident at the centre of how we operate. As a resident’s condition changes over time, we now bring the care and nursing to them, allowing them to stay in the room that they’ve known as their home. This is particularly important for those with dementia as our nurses get to know each person individually and become familiar and valued support. Our nurses are always onsite so our residents don’t have to wait for busy and unfamiliar district nurses to arrive, which means we can respond to their needs more quickly and they rapidly receive the care they need.
Our care model also allows our nursing teams to manage their days more effectively because they have the flexibility to plan according to resident need, which means they are better able to provide excellent care to more people.
