UK Older People's Day took place on Thursday 1 October 2009. The overall theme for the event was ‘bringing generations together' - recognising that there are many benefits in getting to know people outside of your own age group and in being active in the community where you live.
At Lynwood, where the residential care centre neighbours BEN's Head Office, the opportunity was taken to allow staff from the office to get to know residents and it was fantastic to see the residents and Head Office staff getting to know each other and finding out just how much they had in common!
At Town Thorns, young students from the Revel School in Monks Kirby initially visited on 11 September where they chatted with residents about their school experiences as part of their project 'My First Day at School'. On 1 October they presented their findings to the residents and then pupils and residents alike had great fun in the games session when the children brought their favourite games to play with the residents. It was wonderful to see the children's faces as they heard about school life from the residents.
Alexandra House staged a Reminiscence Day with staff dressing up, holding a quiz, serving a wartime lunch menu and being visited by children from Crossens, a local nursery. The children joined in by dressing up and performing a concert of traditional nursery rhymes.
