Lynwood in Ascot Celebrates 60 Years

Staff wore 1940’s dress which truly lifted the spirit of the occasion. Residents and staff at Lynwood Nursing & Residential Centre in Ascot celebrated in style on Wednesday 12 November at a special party to commemorate their 60th birthday. Staff wore 1940's dress which truly lifted the spirit of the occasion. Pianist, Richard Sulley, entertained residents during the afternoon and everyone was treated to a slice of a commemorative BEN birthday cake and a glass of sherry.

Lynwood staff with a residentColonel Leo Harris was the first resident at Lynwood and he arrived on 9 November 1948. Occupancy at that time was just 17 residents. With the success of Lynwood early in 1949, plans were already being made to increase the number of bedrooms by converting the former stables and coach house. At the Official Opening of Lynwood, in June 1949, Colonel Harris told of the care and comfort he had received. The 250 guests were entertained by Morris Motors Prize Band and enjoyed tea in the marquee!

Today, Lynwood is both BEN's national headquarters and a residential centre providing care and accommodation for more than 100 people with a wide spectrum of needs. The principle buildings provide residential and nursing care, with 48 additional flats within the 20 acre grounds offering sheltered accommodation. Lynwood provides nursing and residential care, sheltered housing and a specialist unit for the Elderly Mentally Infirm (EMI). The range of services is extensive and includes a salon, launderette, licensed bar, library, chapel and visitor accommodation.
