David was appointed Chief Executive of BEN in January 2009 and reports to the Management Board. He was brought in with a remit to develop the Fund's services, build on its connections with the industry, and strengthen its finances.
A qualified accountant, David started his career as a Finance Trainee at the Dunlop Group, before moving to run the finance team of Dunlop Sports Company.
He then transferred to the Group headquarters where he was responsible for consolidating financial information for the group worldwide and preparation of Board reports.
David Moved to the BOC Group in 1977, as Chief Accountant within the Consumer Products Division. He was then promoted to Chief Accountant of the BOC's Healthcare business, where he was responsible for manufacturing, sales and distribution activities throughout Europe, Africa, Asia/Pacific and Middle East.
In the early eighties David transitioned from finance into a Business Development role within the healthcare business developing strategies for increasing market share and penetration in a number of European markets. Then when the BOC Group integrated its two healthcare businesses (the Americas and Rest of World), David moved to New Jersey to create the new Corporate headquarters.
Returning to UK, he became Controller for the Medical Sales and Distribution activities outside of North America. Then in 1990 he was appointed Managing Director of BOC's UK Medical Equipment business and, two years later, absorbed the disposable products business to form one UK operating unit turning over £35m.
In 1994, he became Managing Director of Clinical Computing plc, a clinical information systems company, overseeing the extension of the product range. From here he joined a professional services firm as their first Chief Executive and during the next six years the size of the firm trebled through mergers and organic development.
David joined the Civil Service Benevolent Fund in 2003 as Chief Executive and led a programme of reforms, modernising its service offering, structures and governance arrangements and establishing a stronger connection to its client base. After six years in this role, he was recruited to join BEN as Chief Executive.
David is a member of ACEVO (the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations) and has served in a voluntary capacity in a charity supporting the rehabilitation of ex-offenders and as a trustee of a care homes charity.
He is married, with two sons and one daughter, and is actively involved in his local church where he leads the pastoral support work undertaken through small groups and works with the youth in both a spiritual and recreational capacity.
